My Top 5 binge-worthy series on Netflix

Everyone spends the first weeks of summer in a different way.  For some people it means the beginning of a new travel season, others spend it drowning in booze. Were my current circumstances different, I would hover somewhere in between the two, why lie…
Unfortunately (my bank account and liver will thank me later), I had to chose a different path. A path that would force me to lie down with my leg all stitched up, looking like a dead limp without any signs of life. Of course, I had to find a way to entertain myself because otherwise, I would go pretty mad pretty quickly. That’s when I re-discovered the beauty of subscription-based online TV providers (I have no effin idea how to call them), one of them being Netflix. This little guy is what’s been keeping me alive for over a week and I couldn’t be happier, because for 8 dollars a month, I now have my own little cinema full of good old classics and new discoveries at the same time. And of course, I decided to share my current favorites with you. So grab a cuppa, popcorn, lean back and enjoy.

RIVERDALE
Although this one isn’t a Netflix original, I grew to like it pretty quickly. The series is based on the Archie Comics, a real classic! The series, just like the comics, follows the main characters, Archie Andrews and his friends (and enemies) around their hometown Riverdale. As the audience gets introduced into the story, they quickly realize that the little town isn’t as harmonious and perfect as it seems. Since I don’t want to spoil anything, I won’t go into the story too much. The only thing I say is: Don’t judge the Southside Serpents like a book with an ugly cover; you will learn to love them once they let you inside the story. Besides, who doesn’t like leather jackets, tattoos and motorcycles???

DYNASTY
Okay, this one’s a tad bit different from what I usually like to watch. But I loved it no less! The series tells a story of the Carrington family; a fictive American billionaire big-fish family playing an important role in US oil industry.  The story starts with the young heiress Fallon, a typical spoiled rich girl, discovering that her father Blake is engaged to the young and social-ladder-climbing Crystal. She is determined to step into her father’s plans and push Crystal out, away from her family, and mainly, from her wealth. No spoilers intended, Fallon slowly finds out that sometimes, people may surprise you, no matter how they look or behave at the first sight.

PENNY DREADFUL
This one isn’t a new one, nor it is a Netflix original. But you can find it on the handle, together with other amazing mysterious series that are definitely worth binge-watching. The name was inspired by the 19-century serial literature called Penny Dreadful. The stories usually evolved around detective, criminal or mysterious themes, just like its new version does. If you are a fan of dark British novels made famous by names like Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde or Mary Shelley, you will definitely love this one. From vampires to werewolves, from dark magic to Dorian Gray… You’ll find yourself begging for more after the end of each episode. Plus, names like Eva Green or Josh Harnet are, in my opinion are a good time guarantee.

A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS
I admit, this one may look unnecessary and stupid at the first sight but my little artistic heart screams with joy while watching the story of Baudelaire children and their unfortunate life events after the mysterious death of their parents.  They are forced to go and live with their closest relative; the cruel Count Olaf.  Why I like it, you may ask. Well, it has everything I like in a TV series; a little bit of Burton-esque darkness, mysterious and captivating story-line and a catchy opening song. LOOK AWAY, LOOOOK AWAAAAY…

GIRLBOSS
Shame this one was cancelled after the first season. I really liked it, once I started I couldn’t stop and when I realized it was already over, I felt like there was something missing in my life (no exaggerating, really) so I started googling. When I realized the story was based on a book, I immediately felt better and logged on my Amazon account. It tells the story of the beginnings of the Nasty Gal online clothing shop. If you are a true fashion lover, you know what I’m talking about.

Well, these are my last week’s discoveries. Since I am unwillingly planning on using my sofa and my TV for at least two more weeks, I am pretty sure there will be more to share so I’ll keep you posted.

Until next time,
Čauko, Lenka :)
