Lenka´s summer book club

Image
For some of us, summer doesn´t necessarily mean lying on a sandy beach 24/7 and doing oh, sweet nothing. Don´t get me wrong, I like it, too… sometimes. But I get bored, like super easily. For me, summer means freedom; freedom to do whatever you set your mind to. Some like to travel and see places, get lost in museums and galleries, party day and night or finally find some spare time to just sit on your terrace with your family and catch up on everything you haven´t got a chance to share for ages. If I should choose, I would say “a little bit of everything”. But one thing stands out the most for me – books (and not only in summer). I´ve been a dedicated bookworm since I can remember. It all started when my parents introduced me to the sacred magic of Harry Potter. I voluntarily started to go to bed early just to secretly switch on the bedside lamp and read until my mum woke up to me laughing and ordered me to sleep immediately. My love for turning the paper page...

The summer survival guide

Image
As a pale-skin individual loving the British weather, it may become quite a difficult task to survive in a climate that sometimes reaches the south of Slovakia; the temperature can easily climb up to tropical heights. Let´s be honest, some of us are simply not able to adjust to such conditions. Over the years, by using the method of trial and error, I developed a certain number of tips and tricks that help me get through hot summer days. I am not saying I religiously follow them day by day during the summer, sometimes I overrate my abilities and end up regretting straying the “paved ways”. If you are like me and you feel like a slow overcooked slime once the summer shit hits the fan, keep my list by hand and try it. The things we do to feel a tad bit better, right? SPF to avoid burned butt cheeks When the summer temperatures hit Leipzig for the first time this summer, me and my friend decided to abandon our overheated flats and spend the day by a lake lo...

25 lessons learned in 25 years

Image
So yesterday I decided to dye my hair back to pink. While mixing the proper shade, I was watching random YouTube videos and stumbled upon a hilarious video made by this young gentleman from Ireland. He was talking about life lessons that he learned through the years. It kinda clicked with my thoughts on turning 26 pretty soon. I decided to borrow this idea and make it into a new blogspot; made myself a huge coffee, sat on my rug with a note pad and started compiling 25 lessons that I learned (sometimes the hard way) in 25 years of my existence… Here we go:   Don´t let other people make decisions for you. You have to live with yourself for the rest of your life so make it count. Stand by your opinion. If someone doesn´t agree and tries to push their ideas on you, don´t let them.  Enjoy every possible moment with the ones you love (family or friends) because life is too short. Don´t let people judge you for your body shape. If you want to wear a curve-huggin...

My badass take on Ramen soup

Image
On Friday afternoon, I decided to go to the nearby supermarket and stock up on groceries for the upcoming weekend. Walking around, I quickly realised that the shop was filled with Asia-inspired products, which triggered my serious weakness for Asian takeout. The little devil sitting on my left arm started to fill my mind with thoughts like “hmmm” maybe I could have a lazy evening and order something sweet and sour and spicy with tons of noodles. The little angel from the right side, spotting packs with glass-noodles on the counter provided me with the idea of challenging myself to cook something inspired by Asian cuisine. Since I spent the previous evening browsing recipes for the best Ramen soup, I decided to give it a try.  Now I know that originally, you are supposed to use those curly, tangled-up ramen noodles… but honestly, what could go wrong if I used the glass noodles instead? Now, after hooking myself up and preparing the soup three times in a row, I can safe...

The Night Club Research, no. 2

Image
As hinted in the previous post, my thorough research of rare species observed in night clubs did not involve only male samples. I extended my observation on the opposite sex, too and am now pleased to inform you that when it comes to women, one certainly can find a comparable number of extraordinary species in the female spectrum of club visitors, as well. The silent hunter If you read the first half of my research, the first type may seem particularly familiar to you. Why, you may ask. Simply because the silent hunter is the female equivalent to the observer type I mentioned last week. The difference is almost non-existent. The silent hunter usually sits alone (or in a company of fellow silent hunters) by the bar, sips on one or two Cosmopolitans the whole night and relives the Carrie Bradshaw Sex and the City fantasies in her head. Observing the dancefloor and its nearby areas, she carefully picks her future prey. Her plan is to look posh and wanted, never leave the bar s...

The Night Club Research, no. 1

Recently, after the threat of nervous breakdown caused by trying to finish my studies faded, I allowed myself to take a little break. I slept longer, ate healthier (no more trying to save time by ordering take-outs) and spend some time with people I’ve neglected these past months while finishing my Master thesis. I also agreed, and even wanted, to go out clubbing and free my overcrowded mind by shaking my hips to songs I don´t really like; an activity I prefer to avoid most of the time (my past teenage self would hate me for saying this). Since I’ve started writing these pieces, I took it not only as a chance to clear my head, but also as a good opportunity to make a little research for a potential article. And boy, do I have stuff to tell you about! Now, I am not saying that the research I made applies only for men, I am sure that women go clubbing for different reasons as well (possible future article). But for now, ladies and gentlemen, I am presenting you the latest researc...
