A budget-friendly guide through London

Image
Let me guess. You love travelling but you´re not exactly the richest person in the world… You would love to go somewhere but have no idea how to keep things affordable. You´re exactly where you´re supposed to be because I am about to help you loads. As you probably know (because I can get pretty annoying when it comes to this topic) I am working on my PhD and my supervisor arranged an internship in London for me.  I had to spend quite a ginormous amount of money on it and you know… when in London, do as the Londoners do… or Romans… whatever. I didn´t only want to spend time locked off in the archives under the library, I wanted to see and experience everything that London offers and get to the core of what makes London THE city to fall in love with.  And just so you know... if you don´t pay attention, it can get quite expensive. But don´t ya worry lads and lassies, I´ve got you covered. Here are a couple of steps to keep in mind if you´re trying to arrange a trip to t...

I´ve got curly hair... and it took 27 years to find out

Image
Just to clarify; I always knew that my hair was kinda wavy, but more than anything else, it was frizzy, and the natural waves were irregular and all over the place. For the longest time, I´ve sworn by my flat iron because it was the only thing that could help me with tame my frizz. But recently, having been so busy with work, I just couldn´t be bothered with spending half an hour every night to straighten my hair; yo girl gotta sleep! So, one night I just washed my hair, applied my hair oil, refused to stand up from the sofa and grab my hairdryer and flat iron and forgot to brush it through. I went to bed and when I woke up, there were curls…. CURLS!!!. So, the next day I decided to do a little research on how to let one´s curls develop as nice and aesthetically pleasing as possible. I found an article about the “curly girl method” and to be honest, some of the steps sounded weird and ridiculous but I decided to give it a try….and add a little personal touch. Picture  from...

Overfilled bucket list of places I want to see in London.

Image
So yes. This is what happened. I am going to visit London again. The original plan was to visit it either way, I just didn´t know it would be due to such special circumstances. A professor I adored, respected and idolized so much during my studies, is now working at one of the universities in London. Why do you mention this, you may ask? Well, the thing is, I am writing my PhD thesis under “his wings” and his stay in London opened many doors for me, namely the doors of The British Library and its archives. I am going to spend time looking at manuscripts of many famous writers, turning the fragile pages in white gloves. For some people, it may sound boring. However, for me, it´s a dream come true and one of the fruitful outcomes of my hard work.   Of course, I am not going to spend days locked away in the archives. I have so many plans and so many places to visit that now, when I am planning everything, it seems like I won´t have time to sleep. I decided to share some of the typ...

Wedding preparations or how nervous can you actually get?

Image
So, it happened. My little sister got married last Saturday. Let me tell you, the whole weekend was filled with emotions; from emotional ugly-crying to nervous laughing – everything you can imagine. I was doing her hair and make-up. I practiced. A lot. Like the first-week-of-the-wedding-announcement practiced. Almost every weekend, we would sit down (or my sister would sit down, I was jumping around her sitting on a bar chair, doing my best), but there just wasn´t something right with the hair. She wanted a bo-ho half-updo hairstyle and Hollywood waves at the bottom. Nope… After two or three tries, we (or she, rather) rejected the hairstyle and came up with braided half-updo because that´s what I can do. Braids. So, I was watching YouTube tutorials every single evening and trying hard to come up with something I could do, even on the wedding day. I came up with this Daenerys-inspired hairstyle with a side parting. From the part with the less amount of hair, I braided a Dutch br...

My bedroom makeover plans, pt. one

Image
For a long time I couldn´t find my style when it comes to my personal space and filling it with pieces of furniture and decorations I love. From the start, I knew I´ve always loved pictures, paintings, photos and frames of different shapes and sizes hanging on the wall. I also knew I coudln´t live without fairy lights. Fairy lights are life, if you didn´t know. Also, I have always loved natural materials like raw wood, cotton and bright colours. Also, rugs.... rugs make the space more cose and homey. My sister is getting married next week and she is moving house with her soon-to-be husband so there is lots of space to work with. Don´t get me wrong, I am not happy that she is going to live somewhere else, what what can you do, when the two are head over heels with each other. So the makeover is something like a coping therapy for me to live alone after two years of living with her after my return from Germany. How would I describe my personal taste? Princess – Fairy – B...

Another art-related ramble.

Image
A few weeks ago, I talked about how drawing, painting or just doodling mindlessly is a great psycho hygiene for me. It helps me calm down my thoughts and shut down my brain for a while, just like meditation would. It started with a printing paper and markers from my local supermarket. Just the combination of the two made me happy. Then I started watching videos of other people drawing and I saw these double-ended alcohol-based markers that didn´t leave all those nasty unaesthetic streaks that the cheap markers always did. I was amazed, shocked, in love. Of course, my first way led me to my computer; I started searching for the markers and of course I found them… aaand I also saw their price, which wasn´t so lovable. I wasn´t very eager to buy something so expensive to use only as a hobby. So, I let it go. But then, couple of days later, I talked to a friend who draws illustrations professionally. He told me that the expensive markers are amazing, but they are not the only optio...

Skincare that doesn´t break your bank.

Image
I am a firm believer of the idea that makeup is there to cover anything we don´t want others to see, however, why cover something if we can work some skincare magic so there´s nothing to cover? I got this idea from one of my favourite French women Violette_fr and once I jumped on the skincare wagon, there was no turning back. Saying this, I do love me some lotions, serums or toners... However, I don´t really opt for all those steps and extensive routines that I see some of the other women do, nor do I buy all the overpriced product that are presented to me on social media. Not that I don´t treat myself to something special from time to time... But I took time and found out what really works for me and let me tell you, majority of the products are from my local drugstore and I swear by them! And, ladies and gentlemen, I am going to introduce them to you right this second: CLEANSING: Of course, when preparing for the bed time you have to start with wiping a...
